About the University

The University of Greenwich traces its history back to 1890, when Woolwich Polytechnic was founded. It was later known as Thames Polytechnic before gaining full university status in 1992.

Location

The university’s main campus occupies the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, a historic riverside site in South East London, alongside its Avery Hill campus nearby. Greenwich also runs a shared campus in Medway, Kent, giving the university a presence outside London as well as within it.

What Students Can Study

Greenwich offers a broad subject range, including architecture, business, computing, engineering, education, the humanities, maritime studies, natural sciences, pharmacy, and social sciences. Specific course content, structure, and entry requirements vary by department and should be checked directly with the university.

Why Students Consider This University

Students often consider Greenwich for its distinctive historic setting — teaching on the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College, a well-known London landmark — combined with a broad range of subjects across a large student body. Its riverside Greenwich location offers a different feel from central London’s busier university districts, while still being well connected into the city.
