About the University

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) was founded in 1895 by members of the Fabian Society, including Sidney and Beatrice Webb, with the aim of researching and addressing issues such as poverty and inequality through reform-minded scholarship. For much of its history LSE awarded degrees through the federal University of London, and began awarding degrees in its own name in 2008.

Location

LSE is based in central London, near the boundary of Covent Garden and Holborn, in an area historically known as Clare Market. Its central location places students close to Parliament, the legal and financial districts, and the wider institutions its social-science subjects study.

What Students Can Study

LSE specialises specifically in the social sciences, spanning economics, politics, law, sociology, anthropology, accounting, and finance, rather than offering the broad range of natural sciences and humanities found at general universities. It maintains a dedicated economic history department, one of relatively few in the UK to run as a standalone subject. Specific course content, structure, and entry requirements vary by department and should be checked directly with the university.

Why Students Consider This University

Students often consider LSE specifically for its focus on social sciences rather than a general subject range, combined with a central London setting close to the institutions many of its subjects study directly. That focus suits students already set on a social-science, politics, or economics-related path, more than students wanting a broad general degree offering.
