London South Bank University was founded in 1892 as the Borough Polytechnic Institute, one of London’s early polytechnic institutions, and gained full university status in 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act. It adopted its current name in 2003.

The university is based in Elephant and Castle, in the London Borough of Southwark, near the South Bank of the River Thames — the area from which it takes its name. This puts students close to central London while based south of the river.
