About the University
Birkbeck was established in 1823 as the London Mechanics’ Institute, founded by George Birkbeck along with Jeremy Bentham and other supporters. It is one of the few UK universities to specialise in evening higher education, and is a member institution of the federal University of London.
Location
Birkbeck’s main building is in Bloomsbury, central London, with a further campus in Stratford, East London, opened in 2013.
What Students Can Study
Birkbeck offers more than 200 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across five faculties, with courses commonly taught in the evenings to suit students studying alongside work or other commitments. Specific course content, structure, and entry requirements vary by department and should be checked directly with the university.
Why Students Consider This University
Students often consider Birkbeck specifically for its evening-taught courses, a genuinely different model from most UK universities, suited to students who want to combine study with work or other daytime commitments, in a central London setting.
