About the University

Royal Holloway was founded in 1879 by Thomas Holloway as a women-only college, and officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. It became part of the University of London in 1900, first admitted male students in 1965, and merged with Bedford College in 1985 to form Royal Holloway and Bedford New College.

Location

The campus is west of Egham, Surrey, around 19 miles from central London. Its centrepiece, the Founder’s Building, is built in a French-Renaissance style modelled on French chateaux such as the Château de Chambord — a distinctive, non-urban campus setting compared with most London universities.
