About the University
The University of East London traces its roots to the West Ham Technical Institute, which opened in October 1898. It became the North East London Polytechnic in 1988, was renamed the Polytechnic of East London in 1989, and gained university status in 1992.
Location
The university is based at campuses in Stratford and Docklands, in East London. The Stratford campus is centred on a Grade II* listed building dating from the university’s 1898 founding, while the Docklands campus, opened in 1999, was among the first newly built university campuses in London in over fifty years.
What Students Can Study
The university offers study across a range of subject areas through its academic schools, including law and the social sciences. Specific course content, structure, and entry requirements vary by department and should be checked directly with the university.
Why Students Consider This University
Students often consider East London for its East London campuses in Stratford and Docklands, areas that have seen significant redevelopment in recent decades, including around the 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford. Its setting offers a different, more recently developed part of London compared with the older, more central university districts.
