How to Become an Agent for UK Universities

There are two realistic routes, and it helps to know what each involves before you choose.

Route 1: apply to each university directly

Each UK university runs its own agent approval process and decides which agents it works with. Requirements vary, and they are usually designed for agencies that already have a track record. Birmingham City University, for example, asks applicants for the contact details of two references, proof of education agent training or qualifications, proof of business registration and proof of academic qualifications or professional recognition, and gives three to four weeks as its standard processing time for a completed application. If you are new to recruiting for UK universities, references like these can be the hardest part to provide.

Route 2: work through a UK admissions business

The alternative is to work with a business that manages UK applications alongside you. With StudyUKToday, once your account is active you register each student in your Agent Portal with their name, contact details, nationality, study level and course interest. That starts their application and emails the student a link to their own portal, where they or you can add their documents. You do not need your own agreements with UK universities to work with us.

This route also suits agencies that are just starting out. If you don’t yet have references from UK universities, you can apply to work with us instead. We review every application individually.

Students are recorded as yours when you register them through your Agent Portal. An application a student submits on our website by themselves is not linked to you automatically.

What about British Council training?

The British Council runs online UK agent and counsellor training. It is a useful way to learn how UK admissions work, but it is training for an individual, not an authorisation. The British Council explains that a certificate of completion applies to the person who completed the course rather than to their organisation, that certificates are valid for two years, and that it “does not formally endorse, accredit or validate agents and counsellors”. How Commission Works

This is usually the first question an agent asks. Here is our model in plain terms.

We split the commission 50/50. For each student you introduce who enrols, you receive 50% of the commission StudyUKToday receives for that student, and StudyUKToday retains the other 50%.

• Your share is based on what StudyUKToday actually receives. The commission StudyUKToday receives differs between universities and courses, so we do not quote a single percentage of tuition. Your share is always half of the commission StudyUKToday receives for your student.
• Commission is earned on students who enrol. If a student does not enrol, or StudyUKToday receives no commission for that student, there is nothing to split.
• You can see it in your Agent Portal. Your Agent Portal shows the commission recorded for every student you register and what has been paid to you, rather than leaving you to wait for a monthly statement.
• There is no fee to join. You never pay us to become a partner.

We confirm payment timing with you in writing before you register your first student.

How much do UK universities pay agents?

There is no single UK rate. Each university agrees commission with the agents it works with, and rates are generally not published.

Trade reporting gives a sense of the range, not a rule. In August 2022 The PIE News described 10% as the commission rate commonly regarded as standard, reported suggestions that some large recruiting agents may receive 20% or more, and said it had been unable to verify exact rates with universities. When commission is paid also depends on the university. London Metropolitan University, for example, pays commission only once a student is fully enrolled and half of their fees has been received, and reserves the right to reduce commission pro rata if a student leaves early and is refunded. Once your account is active, you’ll use the Agent Portal to register your own students, upload their documents, track every application in progress and see the commission recorded for each student, and what has been paid, in one place. You keep working directly with your students. We handle the UK admissions process alongside you: course and university matching, document checks and application submission.

Who We Work With

We work with education agents and counsellors who already advise students on studying abroad and want a reliable route into UK university admissions for them. You might run an established agency, work as an independent counsellor, or advise students at a school. What matters most is that you give students accurate advice.

We expect every partner to follow the national code of ethical practice for UK education agents, which sits at the heart of the UK Agent Quality Framework, and above all to give students accurate information about courses, costs and entry requirements.

What Happens After You Apply

We review every application individually. This is a genuine business relationship, so it gets a real decision, not an automatic approval. Account set-up opens once our agent agreement is published; we’ll email your set-up link then. You can register students once your account is active.
