About the University
Queen Mary University of London grew out of the merger of several older London colleges, including Queen Mary College, Westfield College, St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, and the London Hospital Medical College. Queen Mary and Westfield College merged in 1989, and the London Hospital Medical College joined in 1995, with the two medical schools combining to form its School of Medicine and Dentistry. The university adopted its current legal name, Queen Mary University of London, in 2013. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities.
Location
The university’s main campus is in Mile End, East London, described as the largest self-contained campus of any London-based university. Queen Mary also operates further sites across East and Central London, including Whitechapel, Charterhouse Square, and West Smithfield, reflecting its medical school history.
What Students Can Study
Queen Mary offers a broad range of subjects across its faculties, with particular institutional depth in medicine and dentistry, reflecting the medical colleges that merged into the university. Specific course content, structure, and entry requirements vary by department and should be checked directly with the university.
Why Students Consider This University
Students often consider Queen Mary for the combination of a genuinely self-contained East London campus with the medical and dental strength inherited from its founding colleges. Its Mile End base gives a more contained, campus-like feel than some of London’s more scattered universities, while still being part of the wider London higher education network.
