About the University

University College London (UCL) was founded in 1826 as a deliberately secular alternative to Oxford and Cambridge, which at the time required religious tests for admission. It faced opposition from the Church of England and existing universities early on, and became a founding college of the federal University of London when that was established in 1900. UCL became an independent university able to award its own degrees in 2005.

Location

UCL’s main campus is in Bloomsbury, central London, close to the British Museum and the wider University of London area. The university has also developed UCL East, a newer campus site in Stratford, East London, alongside its historic Bloomsbury base.

What Students Can Study

UCL is a broad, multi-faculty research university covering subjects from the sciences and medicine to engineering, arts, and social sciences. It was one of five founding members of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence.
