Study in the UK from Ghana

Ghanaian applicants have an advantage most do not realise they hold: your degree is already classified the way the UK classifies degrees. A Second Class Upper is a UK 2:1. There is no conversion, no equivalence table to argue about, and no scale to translate. Around 85% of Ghanaian students granted UK study visas come for a master’s, so that is where this page starts.

Applying for a master’s from Ghana

If your transcript says Second Class Upper, you meet the standard entry requirement for most taught master’s courses in the UK. That is worth stating plainly, because applicants from countries with unfamiliar grading spend a great deal of energy on conversion — and Ghanaian applicants do not need to. Send the transcript as issued.

Your degree must be accredited by GTEC. Sheffield requires a bachelor’s from a recognised university, accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission. This matters more than a grade does, because no result compensates for it. If you studied at a private institution or on a programme you are unsure about, resolve the accreditation question first.

Most taught master’s ask for a 2:1; a meaningful number will consider a 2:2, which brings Second Class Lower into range of a real set of options rather than none.

You may not need IELTS

Sheffield’s published position is that the WAEC West African Senior School Certificate, English at Grade C or above, “can be accepted in place of IELTS or equivalent.”

For a great many Ghanaian applicants that removes a test, a fee and several weeks from the plan. It is set course by course rather than universally, and some departments ask for more — so confirm it against your actual shortlist, and confirm it before booking a test rather than after.

Where a test is required and your score falls just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Undergraduate entry: what WASSCE does and does not do

WASSCE is accepted as evidence of English. It is not, on its own, a route into the first year of a UK degree.

The direct routes are A-levels or the International Baccalaureate. Where neither applies, a foundation programme is the standard path — one year, purpose-built for this transition, ending in entry to the degree itself rather than another application.

Subjects Ghanaian applicants most often choose

Business and management, engineering, computer science, law and health subjects including nursing are the most common. Health subjects carry registration and placement requirements on top of academic entry, so start those earlier than you think you need to.

Documents and finances

Two steps reliably slow Ghanaian applications.

Transcripts and accreditation evidence. Request your transcript early, and be ready to evidence GTEC accreditation if asked.

Proof of funds. This needs to be held properly and for the required period rather than assembled shortly before applying. It is the most common reason an otherwise strong application slips an intake.

Funding

Most Ghanaian students fund UK study through family resources, sometimes with an education loan, and sometimes with a scholarship attached to a specific offer. Those departmental awards are the category most often missed, because they are not advertised as national competitions — ask once an offer is in hand. The scholarship routes worth knowing

Three categories, in the order most Ghanaian applicants should think about them:

University and departmental awards. The largest category by number, the least publicised, and the one most often missed. They are attached to specific courses or departments, frequently decided after you hold an offer, and often partial rather than full. Ask the admissions team directly once your offer is in hand — many are never advertised as competitions at all.

Chevening. The UK government’s international scholarship programme, open to applicants from Ghana, aimed at a one-year master’s and weighted heavily toward leadership and work experience rather than grades alone. It has its own application, its own timetable and its own criteria, entirely separate from your university application. Eligibility and deadlines are published on the Chevening website.

Commonwealth Scholarships. Ghana is a Commonwealth member, and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission runs UK-funded awards for master’s and doctoral study. Again, a separate application with its own criteria — see the CSC directly for what is open in the current cycle.

We do not publish award amounts, deadlines or eligibility details here. They change every cycle, and a stale figure copied into a guide is exactly what causes someone to miss a round. The official sites above are the only versions worth acting on.

An honest word on your chances

Fully funded scholarships to the UK are genuinely competitive — the well-known national schemes attract many applicants for a small number of awards, and strong candidates are unsuccessful every year.

That is not a reason to skip applying. It is a reason to plan as though you will not receive one, and treat any award as an improvement on a plan that already works. Students who build their entire budget around winning a scholarship are the ones who lose a place when it does not arrive.

There is no Ghanaian government loan scheme for overseas study equivalent to the UK’s domestic student finance, so in practice most funding is family resources, personal savings, an education loan from a Ghanaian bank, or a partial award — usually a combination. We do not publish tuition figures on this page. Universities set their own fees per course and academic year, and with Cedi movement against Sterling a figure republished elsewhere is out of date before it is useful. Check the fee on the course page of the university you are applying to, and budget with a buffer rather than a fixed snapshot rate.

Timing

UK postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly. Competitive courses close well before their published dates.
