Study Hospitality and Hotel Management in the UK

Hospitality management is an operational business degree, and the industry it feeds hires on demonstrated experience more than on qualifications. That single fact should shape which programme you choose.

What you study

• Hotel and resort operations — rooms, food and beverage, front of house
• Revenue management — pricing, forecasting, distribution, yield
• Food and beverage management, including cost control
• Events and conference management
• Service quality and guest experience
• Finance and marketing applied to hospitality businesses
• Tourism management, on many programmes

Placement is the differentiator

This subject has an unusually clear rule: choose the programme with the strongest industry placement.

Hospitality is a sector where employers promote from operational experience. A graduate with a year in a hotel’s revenue or operations team is in a materially stronger position than one with a better transcript and no placement — more so than in almost any other business discipline.

Many UK hospitality programmes include a placement year or an industry project, and some are delivered in partnership with hotel groups. Where a placement exists, check:

• Whether it is guaranteed or competitive
• Whether it is paid
• Whether the university places you or you must find it yourself
• How it interacts with your visa conditions — placements that form an assessed part of your course are treated differently from ordinary work, and this is worth confirming with the university rather than assuming. Our work-hours guide covers the general position.

An honest word on the career

Entry is operational, and it is hard work. Hospitality graduates typically start in supervisory or duty-management roles involving shifts, weekends and standing up. Graduates who expect to begin in head office are usually disappointed.

Progression can be fast for people who are good at it — the industry promotes internally and internationally, and hotel groups move people between countries in a way few sectors do. That international mobility is a genuine and underrated advantage of the qualification if you want to work across borders.

Pay at entry is modest relative to other business degrees, and improves with responsibility rather than with time served.

If you want a business degree that leads to an office, hospitality is the wrong one. If you want a business degree that leads to running operations, in a sector that will move you internationally, it is a good one.

Is a UK degree the right choice here?

Worth asking honestly, because hospitality education has strong specialist providers elsewhere — Switzerland most notably — with deep industry links.

The UK’s advantages are the one-year master’s, a large domestic hospitality and events market to gain experience in, and the general international recognition of UK degrees. What it is not is the only serious option in this field, and a specialist school with better placement relationships may serve you better if placement is your priority.

That is not the answer most agencies would give. It is the accurate one.

Entry requirements, in general terms

• A first degree in any discipline for many master’s programmes
• Relevant experience, expected by some programmes and valued by all
• English language evidence at the level the course and visa require — with a practical note that this subject is unusually spoken-English intensive, and arriving at the minimum will make placement harder
