UK nursing degrees lead to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (the professional regulator you must register with to practise as a nurse in the UK) and combine university-based study with substantial clinical placement hours in real healthcare settings from early in the course.

Why Study Nursing in the UK

Nursing is one of the more direct routes from degree to a defined, in-demand profession, with clinical placements built into the course rather than added afterward. You’ll graduate with both an academic qualification and supervised clinical experience, which is what NMC registration requires.

Career Opportunities

UK nursing degrees are usually field-specific from the point of application: Adult, Mental Health, Children’s (Paediatric), or Learning Disability nursing. You register with the NMC in the field you qualify in, so the choice shapes your career and not only your course title.

Moving between fields later is possible but requires further study rather than a simple transfer, which is why it deserves more thought at application stage than most applicants give it. Graduates work in hospitals, community health settings, and increasingly in specialist and leadership roles as their careers develop.

Typical Entry Requirements

Most courses expect science-related school subjects (Biology in particular). English requirements are often set slightly higher than for non-clinical subjects, since accurate communication is safety-critical in healthcare. Check the specific course. Nursing courses in the UK also typically require a background check and occupational health clearance before clinical placements begin, which your university will guide you through as part of enrolment.

Related Degree Options

Midwifery, Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Medicine, Dentistry and Public Health are the closest related fields, each leading to a different professional registration and career path rather than being interchangeable with Nursing.

Foundation Route

A Nursing-focused Foundation Programme exists for students whose school qualification doesn’t directly meet the science-subject requirement, or who need another year of English development first.

Master’s Opportunities

You do not have to have studied nursing as an undergraduate. UK universities run pre-registration postgraduate nursing programmes — usually two years — for graduates of another subject, most often a health or life science. They lead to the same NMC registration as the undergraduate route.

These programmes are competitive and place-limited, and entry usually depends on the content of your first degree rather than its title: relevant human biology or health science content matters more than the name on the certificate. Some also expect care experience, paid or voluntary.

There are also postgraduate courses for people already registered as nurses, which develop specialist or advanced practice. These do not lead to first registration and are a different thing. If you already hold an overseas nursing qualification and your aim is to work in the UK rather than study again, that is an NMC overseas-registration question rather than a university application at all, and our Philippines page sets that distinction out in full. The same distinction applies wherever you qualified — worth checking which type a course is before applying, as the names can look similar.

Scholarships

Funding for nursing students varies and changes over time, including some NHS-linked schemes. Eligibility for international students differs from that for UK students — some NHS-linked support is not open to international applicants at all. Nothing here should be assumed to apply to you without checking directly with the university.

Tuition Fees

Nursing includes significant clinical/placement components, which typically places it toward the higher end of the tuition range compared to purely classroom-based subjects. Universities publish their own fees for each course and academic year, and those published figures are the ones to plan against.

Universities Well-Regarded for Nursing

The University of Southampton, the University of Manchester, the University of Edinburgh, and King’s College London are among the UK’s most recognised nursing departments, a starting point for research, not an exhaustive list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to choose a nursing specialism (adult, mental health, etc.) when I apply?

Yes, in most cases. UK nursing courses are usually field-specific from the point of application, so it’s worth deciding early rather than assuming you can switch after starting.

Will I need a background check to study nursing?

Yes. Clinical placements require a background check and occupational health clearance, which your university arranges as part of enrolment, not something you organise independently beforehand.

Can I switch into nursing without a science background?

Postgraduate conversion routes exist for graduates of related subjects. Ask us about your specific academic background and we’ll advise honestly on your options.
