Study in the UK from Nepal

Nepal is unusual among the UK’s largest source countries: rather more than half of Nepali students come for a bachelor’s or a foundation year rather than a master’s. So this page covers both routes properly, starting with the one question that stops most Nepali master’s applications — whether a three-year bachelor’s is enough on its own.

If you hold a three-year bachelor’s

Short answer: on its own, usually not — but with a Nepali master’s on top, yes.

The University of Sheffield’s published requirement is “a 4 year bachelors degree or a 3 year bachelors degree followed by a 2 year masters degree”. Many Nepali bachelor’s degrees run three years, so for a large number of applicants the second route is the relevant one, and the qualification that makes the application work is the master’s you may not have thought to mention.

The grades needed differ depending on which route you are on:

Note what that second row means in practice: on the master’s route the bar is set on the master’s result, and it is a higher percentage than the four-year route asks for. A 68% master’s following a three-year bachelor’s is a strong application; the same 68% read as a four-year bachelor’s would be stronger still. Send both certificates and both transcripts — an application that mentions only the bachelor’s is the most common way a qualified Nepali applicant gets assessed as under-qualified.

Undergraduate: +2 needs a foundation year

Sheffield’s published position is that candidates who have completed National Examinations Board examinations in Nepal “and who have also completed an approved Foundation Programme” can be considered for undergraduate entry. The +2 or NEB qualification on its own does not give direct entry to a UK bachelor’s degree.

Given how much of Nepal’s UK-bound cohort is undergraduate, this is the most important sentence on the page for a lot of readers, and it is better framed as a route than a rejection. A foundation programme is one year, purpose-built for this transition, and finishes with entry to the degree itself. It is not a remedial year and it is not a second-class route — it is how most Nepali students reach a UK bachelor’s.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for bachelor’s study and 6.5 for master’s, in line with UKVI regulations, with departments free to ask for more. NEB English does not appear as a substitute in the requirements we checked, so plan on sitting a recognised test.

If your score lands just under an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Nepali applicants most often choose

Business and management, computer science, engineering and nursing are the most common choices. Nursing carries requirements the others do not — registration and clinical placement rules apply on top of academic entry — so start that one earlier than you think you need to.

Documents and proof of funds

Nepali applications are scrutinised carefully on finances, and this is where timelines slip. Expect to evidence funds properly and to hold them for the required period rather than assembling them at the last moment. Bring certificates and transcripts for every qualification you are relying on — for the three-year-plus-master’s route that means four documents, not two.

Funding

Most Nepali students fund UK study through family resources and an education loan, sometimes with a scholarship attached to a specific offer. Those offer-linked, department-level awards are the ones most often missed, because they are not advertised as national competitions — ask once you have an offer.

Timing

Foundation and undergraduate entry runs to a different rhythm from postgraduate. Foundation programmes typically have more than one intake a year, which gives useful flexibility if your results or your English test land late.

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year ahead and are assessed on arrival rather than at a deadline, so early matters more than perfect. Leave room for financial documentation, which is the step most likely to add weeks.
