Study Public Health in the UK

An MPH is not a medical degree and does not make you a clinician. Public health is about populations rather than patients — epidemiology, health policy, disease prevention, health systems and the social determinants of health.

That distinction matters because a number of applicants arrive hoping an MPH is a route into UK clinical practice. It is not, and no public health master’s is.

What an MPH actually is

The Master of Public Health is the standard qualification in the field. Typical content:

• Epidemiology — how disease is distributed and studied in populations
• Biostatistics — the quantitative backbone, and more demanding than many expect
• Health policy and systems — how healthcare is organised, funded and governed
• Health promotion and disease prevention
• Global health, on many programmes
• Environmental and occupational health

Related titles include MSc Global Health, MSc Epidemiology, MSc Health Economics and MSc Health Policy. These are narrower and more specialised; an MPH is the generalist qualification.

Biostatistics is the module people underestimate. If your background is not quantitative, look at how the programme teaches it before applying.

Who it suits

Public health master’s degrees draw an unusually mixed cohort, and that is part of their value:

• Doctors, nurses and other clinicians moving toward population health, policy or research
• Graduates in life sciences, social sciences, economics or statistics
• People already working in health systems, NGOs or government

Many programmes welcome applicants without a clinical background. Some specialist routes expect a clinical qualification, so check.

Careers, and an honest note on the UK

Public health graduates work in government and local authority health teams, the NHS, international agencies and NGOs, research institutes, health economics and consultancy, and academia. Related routes include healthcare management for the service-delivery side and social work for direct practice.

Two honest points about the UK specifically:

Formal public health specialist roles in the UK are highly structured. The route to consultant-level public health practice runs through competitive specialty training with its own entry process, and an MPH alone does not confer that status. The Faculty of Public Health is the professional body and the reference point for how the profession is organised here.

Much of the demand is international. Global health, NGO and development work is where a large share of MPH graduates go, and that is worth knowing if your plan assumed a UK public-sector career. If you intend to return home, an MPH travels well — the discipline is genuinely international in a way clinical qualifications are not.

Entry requirements, in general terms

• An honours degree, usually at 2:1 or equivalent, in a health, life science, social science or quantitative subject
• A clinical qualification for some specialist routes only
• Relevant work experience, which some programmes expect and which strengthens most applications
• English language evidence at the level the course and visa require

The main check is that the degree matches the outcome you want. An MPH is a strong qualification for population health, policy, research and international work. It is not a clinical qualification and not a route into UK medical practice.
