Study in the UK from Indonesia

Two facts shape most Indonesian applications, and both are unusually specific. For school leavers, direct entry with an SMA diploma is possible but narrow — at Sheffield it applies only to Garuda schools, and only for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences courses without a subject prerequisite. For graduates, there is better news than most people expect: a D4 Sarjana Terapan is accepted for master’s entry alongside the S1, which a lot of applied-degree holders assume is not the case.

Leaving school: a narrow direct route, and a normal one

Sheffield’s published position is that it accepts “the Indonesian Senior High School Diploma (SMA) from Garuda schools for entry to courses in Arts and Humanities/Social Sciences where there is no subject prerequisite”, with entry requirements varying by course “and range from 88-95”.

Read that carefully, because every clause is a limit:

• Garuda schools only — not all Indonesian senior high schools
• Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences only — not science, engineering or medicine
• No subject prerequisite — so courses that require specific subjects are excluded
• 88–95 depending on the course, which is a demanding range

If any of those does not fit, a foundation programme is the standard route, and it is not a lesser one: one year, purpose-built, ending in entry to the degree. Given how narrow the direct route is, the foundation year is what most Indonesian school leavers will use, and planning around it from the start is more useful than treating it as a fallback.

Applying for a master’s from Indonesia

Both the S1 and the D4 are accepted. Sheffield names “S1 Sarjana Bachelor degree” and “D4 Sarjana Terapan / Diploma IV” as qualifying degrees for master’s entry.

That second one matters and is often missed. Holders of a D4 applied degree frequently assume the UK treats it as a diploma rather than a degree and do not apply at all. At Sheffield it is named alongside the S1. If you hold a D4, you are very likely eligible — submit it rather than assuming it will not count.

The GPA required:

Most taught master’s ask for a 2:1; a meaningful number will consider a 2:2, which puts a 2.75 within range of a real set of options rather than none. Send your transcript with your institution’s grading key rather than converting anything yourself.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published position is that “all applicants are required to have an internationally recognised English language qualification such as IELTS”, with a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent in line with UKVI regulations, and some departments requiring more.

No Indonesian qualification appears as a substitute in the requirements we checked, so plan on sitting a recognised test. If your score falls just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge.

Subjects Indonesian applicants most often choose

Business and management, engineering, economics and computer science are the most common. Note the interaction with the undergraduate route above: the direct SMA route excludes science and engineering entirely, so an Indonesian school leaver aiming at engineering should plan on a foundation year from the outset rather than discovering the restriction late.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification, with certified translations where the originals are in Indonesian. If you are relying on a D4, submit the full transcript alongside it — the applied content is what demonstrates the level.

Funding

Most Indonesian students fund UK study through family resources, a sponsor, or a government scholarship programme. Sponsored and government-funded students should confirm the approved course and university list before building a shortlist, because those lists rarely align with university deadlines and an offer from an unapproved institution cannot be used.

Timing

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than at a deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly.
