Marketing master’s degrees split into two broad kinds, and the difference shows up in your first job. Strategic marketing programmes teach brand, consumer behaviour and market strategy. Digital marketing programmes teach the channels, analytics and tooling that most entry-level roles actually ask for.
Neither is better. They suit different people, and the module list tells you which one you are looking at.
The main variants
MSc Marketing — the core degree: consumer behaviour, brand management, marketing strategy, research methods.
MSc Digital Marketing — search, social, content, paid media, marketing analytics, and the platforms behind them.
MSc Marketing Management — more managerial and organisational, often accepting a wider range of first degrees.
MSc International Marketing — cross-border strategy, cultural difference, market entry. Frequently chosen by international students intending to work between markets.
MSc Marketing Analytics — the quantitative end: data, measurement, attribution, often with real statistical and tooling content.
Accreditation worth checking
The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) accredits some UK marketing degrees, and graduates of accredited programmes may be eligible for exemptions from CIM qualifications.
If a professional marketing qualification matters to your plans, check the accreditation on CIM’s own site rather than the university prospectus, since accreditations are renewed periodically.
The thing that actually gets marketing graduates hired
Being blunt, because this field is unusual: a portfolio of real work beats a good transcript in most marketing recruitment.
Employers hiring at entry level typically want to see evidence you have done the thing — a campaign you ran, an account you grew, analytics you interpreted, content that performed. A degree gets you considered; work samples get you hired.
Practical consequences for a one-year UK master’s:
- Start building evidence from month one, not after graduation. Freelance work, a society’s social accounts, a small business’s campaigns, your own project — all count.
- Learn the tools that appear in job adverts — analytics platforms, ad managers, CRM, SEO tooling. Many are free to learn.
- Certifications are cheap and quick. Platform certifications from the major ad and analytics providers cost little and are widely recognised.
This is genuinely one of the fields where an international student can arrive with a portfolio and compete well, because the evidence is transferable across borders in a way that, say, UK-specific legal knowledge is not.
Entry requirements, in general terms
- A first degree in any discipline for many programmes — marketing is a common conversion subject
- A business or marketing degree for some of the more specialised routes
- Quantitative evidence for marketing analytics programmes specifically
- English language evidence at the level the course and visa require
- Work experience, expected by some management-oriented programmes
See the UK grading system if the classification requirement is unfamiliar.
Careers
Brand and product marketing, digital and performance marketing, market research and insight, communications and PR, agency-side account work, and increasingly analytics-focused roles.
The UK agency sector is large, and agencies are a common first destination for graduates because they hire in volume and expose you to several clients quickly. In-house roles tend to want a little more experience first.
One honest note on timing: the Graduate Route gives you a period to work after your course, and marketing recruitment is generally less rigidly cycle-bound than finance — which works in your favour, provided you have evidence to show.
Where we fit in
We help you choose between the variants above based on the work you actually want, check whether accreditation is real and current where it matters, and get the application right.
Tell us what you have studied and what you want to be doing. If you want a hands-on digital role, a heavily theoretical strategy course is the wrong purchase, and we will say so.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can international students study marketing in the UK?
Yes. Many marketing master’s degrees accept graduates from any discipline, making it a common conversion subject, subject to entry requirements and English language evidence.
What is the difference between MSc Marketing and MSc Digital Marketing?
MSc Marketing covers brand, consumer behaviour and strategy. MSc Digital Marketing focuses on channels, analytics and platforms — closer to what most entry-level roles ask for day to day.
Is a UK marketing degree CIM accredited?
Some are. Accredited programmes may bring exemptions from Chartered Institute of Marketing qualifications. Check CIM’s own listing rather than the prospectus, since accreditation is renewed periodically.
Do I need a business degree to study marketing in the UK?
Usually not. Many programmes accept any discipline. More specialised routes, particularly marketing analytics, may require a business background or quantitative evidence.
How long is a marketing master's in the UK?
Normally one year full-time, like most UK taught master’s degrees.
What do employers look for in marketing graduates?
Evidence of real work — campaigns run, accounts grown, analytics interpreted, content that performed. A portfolio typically matters more than the transcript at entry level.
Are marketing certifications worth doing alongside a degree?
Yes. Platform certifications in analytics and advertising are inexpensive, quick, widely recognised, and directly address what job adverts ask for.
Can I work in UK marketing after graduating?
The Graduate Route permits a period of work after your course. Marketing recruitment is less rigidly cycle-based than finance, which helps — but you will need demonstrable work to show.
