Study in the UK from Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is unlike the other large markets sending students to the UK: fewer than three in ten Saudi students granted UK study visas come for a master’s. The rest come for undergraduate degrees, foundation years and English programmes. So this page starts where most Saudi applicants actually start — at the beginning — and then covers postgraduate entry, where the thing to get right is which GPA scale your transcript uses.

Leaving school: the routes into a UK degree

Sheffield lists three A-levels as the qualification considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes. The Saudi General Secondary Education Certificate is not named among the direct-entry routes.

That makes the practical position straightforward. If you hold A-levels or the International Baccalaureate — as students from international schools in the Kingdom often do — you can apply directly to the first year. If you hold the Tawjihiyah, expect a foundation programme to be the route: one year, purpose-built for this transition, ending in entry to the degree rather than in another application.

Choose the foundation programme by where it leads. Many are attached to a specific university and progress into its degrees, and picking one without checking the progression route is how students end up applying twice.

Applying for a master’s from Saudi Arabia

You will normally need a four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant subject.

Read the row that matches your transcript’s scale. Saudi universities use both a 5.0 and a 4.0 scale, and Sheffield publishes both:

This is the single most common place a Saudi applicant misreads their own result. A 3.75 on a five-point scale is a 2:1. Converted carelessly into a four-point figure it looks like a 3.0 — which happens to also be the 2:1 threshold on that scale, so the error sometimes cancels out and sometimes does not. Do not convert. Send the transcript as your university issued it, with the grading key, and let the admissions team read the correct row.

Most taught master’s ask for a 2:1; a meaningful number will consider a 2:2, which brings 3.0/5.0 or 2.5/4.0 into range of a real set of options.

Sponsorship changes the order of everything

A significant share of Saudi students studying abroad are sponsored rather than self-funding, and sponsorship changes the sequence of an application rather than simply who pays.

Sponsors typically maintain their own list of approved universities and courses, their own deadlines, and their own documentation requirements — and those rarely align with university application deadlines. The advice is simple and worth following: establish what your sponsor will approve before you build a university shortlist, not after. An offer from a university your sponsor does not recognise cannot be used, and it is an entirely avoidable waste of an application cycle.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for undergraduate study and 6.5 for postgraduate, with some departments asking for more.

Note that a foundation programme will normally carry its own English requirement, separate from the degree it leads into — so there may be two thresholds to clear at two different points. Plan for that rather than discovering it.

Where a score falls just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Saudi applicants most often choose

Business and management, engineering, computer science, law and health subjects including nursing and pharmacy are common choices. Health subjects carry registration and placement requirements on top of academic entry — start those earlier than you think you need to, particularly if a sponsor also has to approve the course.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification, with certified translations where the originals are in Arabic, plus your sponsor’s documentation where one is involved.

Funding

Where a student is not sponsored, UK study is normally funded from family resources. Timing

If you are sponsored, the sponsor’s calendar is the binding one and usually runs earlier than the university’s. Start there.

Foundation programmes often have more than one intake a year, which gives real flexibility if results or an English score land late. Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than at a deadline.
