The University of Birmingham was founded in 1900, though it grew out of earlier Birmingham colleges, and was one of the first of the English “civic universities” — institutions founded in major industrial cities to give local people access to higher education. It was a founding member of the Russell Group, an association of research-intensive UK universities.
