About the University
Birmingham Newman University was founded in 1968 as Newman College of Higher Education, on land donated by the Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham for a teacher training college. It gained full university status in 2013 and adopted its current name in 2023. The university is named after John Henry Newman, the 19th-century religious figure with strong historical links to Birmingham.
