Study in the UK from Kazakhstan

The Attestat on its own does not open a UK degree — but two other routes do, and most Kazakhstani applicants have never been told about either. One year of a Bakalavr at an average of 4 out of 5 is accepted for entry, and so is the Diploma of Specialised Secondary Education. Neither requires a foundation year, and both are commonly held.

Getting into a UK bachelor’s: four routes, not one

Sheffield lists these qualifications for undergraduate entry:

The third row is the one worth pausing on. If you have started a degree in Kazakhstan and completed a year at 4/5 or better, you may be able to enter a UK bachelor’s directly — no foundation year, no additional qualification. Students in exactly that position often assume the only options are to finish the Kazakhstani degree or start again from scratch in the UK. Neither is true.

The fourth row matters for a different group: holders of a specialised secondary (college) diploma, who are frequently told their qualification is not academic enough for a UK university. Sheffield lists it.

The Attestat alone is not listed. Where none of the four routes fits, a foundation programme remains the standard path — one year, purpose-built, ending in entry to the degree itself.

Applying for a master’s from Kazakhstan

Sheffield asks for “a four to six-year bachelors degree” from a recognised university in a relevant subject. That upper bound is deliberate — it accommodates the longer specialist degrees still awarded in the region, so a five- or six-year qualification is not an anomaly to explain away.

Three grading scales are in use, and Sheffield publishes all of them:

The 4.33 scale is the one that causes trouble, because it looks close enough to a 4.0 scale to invite a careless comparison. A 3.33 on a 4.33 scale is a 2:1; read as though it were out of 4.0, it looks like a comfortable pass and is actually being under-read in the other direction. Do not convert between the columns — send the transcript as your university issued it, with the grading key, and let the admissions team read the correct row.

Most taught master’s courses ask for a 2:1; a meaningful number will consider a 2:2, which brings the bottom row into range of a real set of options.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with some departments asking for more. No Kazakhstani qualification appears as a substitute in the requirements we checked, so plan on sitting a recognised test and build the time and cost into the plan.

Where a score lands just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Kazakhstani applicants most often choose

Business and management, engineering, economics and computer science are the most common, reflecting a strong technical and energy-sector background.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification you rely on, with certified translations. Two specifics matter here more than usual:

If you are using the one-year-of-Bakalavr route, your university transcript is the document the whole application rests on — it must show both the year completed and the average.

If your degree ran five or six years, make sure the duration is stated on the certificate or transcript rather than left to be inferred.

Funding

Most Kazakhstani students fund UK study through family resources, sometimes with a sponsor or a government programme. Sponsored students should confirm the approved university and course list before building a shortlist, because those lists rarely align with university deadlines and an offer from an unapproved institution cannot be used.

We do not publish tuition figures on this page. Universities set their own fees per course and academic year, so check the figure on the course page of the university you are applying to, and budget with a buffer for Tenge movement rather than a fixed snapshot rate.

Timing

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly.

If you are using the one-year-of-Bakalavr route, plan the timing deliberately: you will be applying partway through a Kazakhstani degree, and the transcript you need may not exist until that year is complete.
