Studying in the UK from Namibia offers Namibian students the chance to pursue higher education at world-renowned institutions. The UK education system is highly regarded, and Namibian students can find a range of courses and programmes that suit their academic and career goals.
If you hold the NSSC: what UK universities actually ask for
Your Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC) is recognised by UK universities, but the level at which you enter depends on which universities you apply to, and they do not all agree. The most important thing to understand is that an NSSC alone — even at Higher Level — usually does not lead straight into the first year of a UK degree.
The University of Brighton publishes its Namibian requirements in full. For undergraduate entry it states it requires “a Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate (COHSC) / GCE A level or a Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate (higher level) with successful completion of an international foundation year or equivalent” (Brighton’s published Namibia equivalencies).
Queen Mary University of London takes a similar view, considering Namibian school qualifications for entry onto its own Foundation course rather than directly onto year one.
So the realistic route for most NSSC holders is a Foundation Programme followed by a three-year degree. That is not a setback — it is the standard, well-trodden path, and a foundation year is designed to bridge exactly this gap. Be cautious of anyone who tells you direct entry is straightforward: on the published evidence from these universities, it is not the normal outcome.
For English language there is better news. The University of Portsmouth states it accepts “Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary Level/Higher Level - Grade C or Grade 3 or above in English” (Portsmouth’s Namibia page) — listed alongside IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo as an accepted English qualification. That can remove the need for a separate English test entirely. Not every university does this, so check before you pay for a test you may not need.
If you already hold a Namibian degree: applying for a UK master’s
This is the route Namibian graduates most often overlook, and it is frequently the faster one. A Namibian bachelor’s degree can be accepted directly onto a UK master’s — no foundation year involved.
Brighton publishes how it converts Namibian grades to UK degree classifications:
| Namibian result | GPA / grade | UK equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Distinction | 4.0 GPA / A / 80%+ | UK First |
| Very good | 3.0 GPA / B / 70–79% | UK 2:1 |
| Good | 2.0 GPA / C / 60–69% | UK 2:2 |
Brighton states it requires “a bachelor’s honours degree / professional bachelor’s degree (post 2008) or a master’s degree” for postgraduate entry.
This matters because many UK master’s courses accept a 2:2. If your Namibian degree converts to a “Good” or better, you may already meet the academic requirement for a substantial number of UK master’s programmes.
All of the above is Brighton’s and Portsmouth’s published policy, not a UK-wide rule. Other universities set their own thresholds, and they differ — which is precisely why the university you apply to matters as much as your grades. We check your specific qualifications against the published requirements of the universities you are considering, rather than guessing.
What it costs, and what you must prove
Beyond tuition, the UK government sets a financial requirement you must evidence for your Student visa. As published by GOV.UK, you must show:
| Where you study | Per month | Maximum | Total to evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| In London | £1,529 | 9 months | £13,761 |
| Outside London | £1,171 | 9 months | £10,539 |
Studying outside London reduces the amount you must prove by £3,222 — and tuition and rent are typically lower too. For Namibian applicants weighing affordability, choosing a university outside London is usually the single largest saving available. See our UK Tuition & Study Costs Guide for tuition ranges by course type.
Subjects Namibian students commonly choose
Business, engineering, computer science and law are the most common fields among the students we work with, alongside healthcare subjects such as nursing and pharmacy. If you are weighing options, our guidance on choosing a UK university course sets out how entry requirements differ by subject.
Getting help with your application
We offer course selection, university matching, document review and application support at no cost to you. We do not provide visa administration or accommodation services — for those, use the official GOV.UK Student visa guidance and your university’s accommodation office.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I go straight into a UK degree with an NSSC Higher Level?
Usually not. The University of Brighton requires an NSSC (Higher Level) plus successful completion of an international foundation year or equivalent for undergraduate entry, and Queen Mary considers Namibian school qualifications for its Foundation course. A foundation year followed by a three-year degree is the normal route. Requirements vary between universities, so the answer depends on where you apply.
Can I apply for a UK master's with a Namibian bachelor's degree?
Yes, and this route does not require a foundation year. Brighton publishes an equivalency in which a Namibian “Distinction” maps to a UK First, “Very good” to a 2:1 and “Good” to a 2:2. Many UK master’s courses accept a 2:2, so a Namibian degree graded “Good” or above may already meet the academic requirement at a range of universities.
How much money do I need to show for a UK Student visa?
GOV.UK requires you to evidence £1,529 per month for up to 9 months if you study in London (£13,761 in total), or £1,171 per month for up to 9 months outside London (£10,539 in total). This is separate from your tuition fees. Studying outside London reduces the amount you must prove by £3,222.
What are the English language requirements for Namibian students?
Some UK universities accept your NSSC English grade instead of a separate English test. The University of Portsmouth accepts a Grade C or Grade 3 or above in English on the NSSC. Not all universities do this, so confirm with the specific university before booking and paying for an IELTS test.
How is the NSSC qualification viewed by UK universities?
The NSSC is recognised, but the level of entry depends on whether it is at Ordinary Level or Higher Level and on the individual university’s published policy. Ordinary Level requires a Foundation Programme. Higher Level, on the published policies of Brighton and Queen Mary, also routes through a foundation year rather than direct entry.
How can I apply to a UK university from Namibia?
We provide course selection, university matching, document review and application support free of charge. The practical first step is to have your NSSC or degree checked against the published entry requirements of the universities you are considering, so you apply where you are actually eligible.
