Study in the UK from Turkey

Turkish students are told, often confidently, that a Turkish high school diploma means a foundation year before a UK degree. For a large number of applicants that is simply not true. The University of Sheffield accepts the Turkish high school diploma for direct entry, with published grade bands — and it accepts several types. What it does require is that your school is verified on MEB e-Okul.

Going straight into a UK bachelor’s

Sheffield states it accepts “the Turkish High School Diploma (including Devlet Lise Diplomasi, Lise Bitirme Diplomasi, Anadolu Lisesi Diplomasi, Fen Lisesi Diplomasi) from MEB e-Okul verified schools.”

Two things in that sentence matter. All the common diploma types are named — this is not a route reserved for Fen Lisesi graduates. And MEB e-Okul verification is the gate: the diploma must come from a school on that system.

The grades are published as a direct mapping to UK A-level offers, using your final-year (Grade 12) results out of 100:

Read that table against the courses you actually want. A 76% average is not “not good enough for the UK” — it is an ABB offer, which is a very large number of good UK degrees. The mistake we see most often is a student assuming they need a foundation year, spending a year and the fee on one, and arriving at a course they could have entered directly.

If your average falls below these bands, a foundation programme remains a genuine route — but check the direct bands first rather than assuming.

Applying for a master’s from Turkey

You will normally need a four-year lisans from a recognised Turkish university.

The GPA you need depends on which university awarded it, and Sheffield names the institutions:

The gap is only 0.2, but it sits exactly where a lot of applicants land. A 2.85 from METU clears a 2:1; the same 2.85 from most other universities does not. If you are close to the line, that single fact should shape which UK universities you apply to and in what order — and it is worth checking each UK university’s own list, because they do not all name the same Turkish institutions.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with some departments asking for more. Plan on sitting a recognised test. If your score falls just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Turkish applicants most often choose

Engineering, business and management, computer science, economics and architecture are common choices — a pattern that reflects how many Turkish applicants come from Fen Lisesi and technical backgrounds.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification, with certified translations where the originals are in Turkish, plus evidence that your school is MEB e-Okul verified where you are relying on the direct-entry route.

Funding

Most Turkish students fund UK study through family resources, sometimes with a scholarship attached to a specific offer. Those offer-linked departmental awards are the ones most often missed, because they are not advertised as national competitions.

Timing

Turkish final-year results and the UK application cycle do not line up neatly, and this is worth planning around rather than discovering. UK undergraduate applications are usually made well before your Grade 12 results are final, so you will normally apply on predicted grades and receive a conditional offer.

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive, so early beats perfect.
