Study in the UK from Taiwan

Taiwanese applicants meet two published rules that most advice online misses. At school-leaving level, the Senior High School Leaving Certificate on its own needs a foundation year — but adding a two-year Junior College Diploma opens first-year entry directly. And at master’s level, the mark you need is set by percentage rather than GPA, and it moves by five points depending on where you studied.

Leaving school: two routes, and the second one is faster

Sheffield’s published position is that applicants “who have successfully completed the Senior High School Leaving Certificate will need to complete a recognised Foundation programme to be considered for entry into the first year of undergraduate programmes.”

But there is a second route that skips it. Sheffield also accepts “the Senior High School Leaving Certificate plus the two year Junior College Diploma (minimum average of 70% overall)” for first-year entry.

So a student who has completed a Junior College Diploma at 70% or above may go straight into year one of a UK degree, with no foundation year. If you hold that qualification, lead with it — it is the difference between three years and four.

Where the direct route is not open, a foundation programme is the standard path: one year, purpose-built, ending in entry to the degree.

Applying for a master’s from Taiwan

Taiwan is one of the more postgraduate-weighted markets sending students to the UK, and the requirement is published as a percentage, not a GPA:

Sheffield states the equivalence “depend[s] on the university you have attended and the course you have applied to study.”

Two practical points. The five-point gap is decisive at the margin — a 72% average is a 2:1 from a prestigious institution and short of one elsewhere, which is exactly the range a lot of applicants sit in. And the requirement is a percentage, so do not convert your transcript into a GPA to make it look familiar to a UK reader. Send it as your university issued it, with the grading key. Converting is how a qualifying average gets read as a failing one.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with some departments asking for more. No Taiwanese qualification appears as a substitute in the requirements we checked, so plan on sitting a recognised test.

If your score lands just under an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Taiwanese applicants most often choose

Business and management, computer science, engineering and economics are the most common, reflecting Taiwan’s technology and manufacturing base. These are also the courses where the institutional banding above matters most.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification, with certified translations. If you are using the Junior College Diploma route, that diploma and its transcript are what the application rests on — send both, not just the Senior High School certificate.

Timing

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than at a deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly. Competitive courses in business and computing close well before their published dates.
