Study in the UK from South Korea

The Suneung on its own needs a foundation year — but a Junior College Diploma at 90% or above skips it entirely, going straight into the first year of a UK degree. Few applicants know that route exists. At master’s level the complication is different: Korean universities grade on three separate scales, and reading the wrong one is the easiest way to misjudge your own eligibility.

Leaving school: the Suneung, and a faster route past it

Sheffield’s published position is direct: applicants who have completed the Korean High School Diploma “will need to complete a recognised Foundation programme to be considered for entry.” The Suneung (CSAT) alone does not open the first year of a UK degree.

But the Junior College Diploma does, at 90% or above. Sheffield lists it among the qualifications accepted for direct admission, alongside A-levels (minimum three) and the International Baccalaureate. For a student who has completed a two-year Junior College programme at a strong average, that is a materially faster route than starting a UK foundation year from scratch.

Where none of those applies, a foundation programme remains the standard path — one year, purpose-built for this transition, ending in entry to the degree itself.

Applying for a master’s from South Korea

Sheffield accepts the Haksa — the Korean bachelor’s degree — for postgraduate entry, and publishes the equivalence across all three scales in common use:

Read the column that matches your own transcript, and do not convert between them. The three scales sit close enough together that a careless comparison is easy to make and easy to get wrong — a 3.1 on the 4.3 scale is a 2:1, but read against the 4.0 column it looks short of the bar. Send your transcript as your university issued it, with the grading key, and let the admissions team apply the correct column.

Most taught master’s courses ask for a 2:1; a meaningful number will consider a 2:2, which brings the lower row into range of a real set of options.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with some departments asking for more. No Korean qualification appears as a substitute in the requirements we checked, so plan on sitting a recognised test.

Where a score lands just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects South Korean applicants most often choose

Business and management, computer science, economics and engineering are the most common. These are also the courses most likely to carry a higher grade requirement, so the scale question above matters most exactly where demand is highest.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification you rely on, with certified translations. If you are using the Junior College Diploma route, that diploma and its transcript are what the application rests on — send both, not just school records.

Timing

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly. Competitive courses in business and computing close well before their published dates.
