Study in the UK from France

Most French-facing advice about studying in the UK was written before 2021 and is now wrong in the two ways that matter most: French students need a visa, and they pay international fees. The academic side, by contrast, is straightforward and better than many assume — the Baccalauréat is accepted for direct entry, and a Licence at 13/20 reads as a UK 2:1.

What changed, and what did not

Since the UK left the EU, French students are international students for both fee and immigration purposes. Home-fee status and the automatic right to study without a visa no longer apply.

That is the honest headline, and any page that skips it is not helping you plan. What has not changed is the academic recognition: your qualifications are read the same way they always were, and the routes below are direct.

Applying to a UK bachelor’s from France

Sheffield’s published position is that “French Baccalaureate diploma holders will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.”

No foundation year, no equivalence exam, no additional qualification. The Baccalauréat is treated as a school-leaving qualification suitable for direct entry, and individual courses set their own grade requirements on top of that in the normal way.

Two structural differences are worth understanding before you apply, because they change what a good application looks like:

UK degrees are specialised from the first year. You apply to read one subject rather than entering a faculty and choosing later. A French applicant used to a broader first year should expect to commit earlier.

A UK bachelor’s is usually three years, against the French Licence’s three — so the structures line up more neatly than the UK’s relationship with several other systems.

Applying for a master’s from France

Sheffield names “Licence; Grade de Licence; Maîtrise” as qualifying French degrees for master’s entry.

This is the number most French applicants get wrong, in a specific and costly direction. In the French system 13/20 is a respectable but unremarkable result; against UK classifications it is an upper second, which is the standard requirement for a taught master’s. Students who assume they need a mention très bien to be competitive routinely do not apply at all.

Most taught master’s courses ask for a 2:1; a meaningful number will consider a 2:2, which brings 11/20 into range. Send your relevé de notes and let the admissions team read it against their own published scale rather than converting it yourself.

A UK master’s is normally one year, against the two years of a French Master. That is one year of fees and living costs rather than two, and a year earlier into work — the practical argument that most often decides it.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for undergraduate study and 6.5 for postgraduate, with departments free to ask for more.

French applicants often have strong English and reasonably ask whether the test can be avoided. Some universities accept alternative evidence; it is set course by course and never universal, so confirm it against your shortlist rather than assuming. Where a score falls just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge.

Subjects French applicants most often choose

Business and management, economics, law and computer science are common choices. Law deserves a note: UK law degrees are undergraduate rather than postgraduate, and the relationship between a UK law degree and qualifying in France is a separate question worth resolving before you apply.

Documents

French applications are usually document-light: your Baccalauréat or degree certificate, your relevé de notes, and a personal statement. The personal statement carries more weight in the UK than its French equivalent might suggest, and it should be about the subject rather than about you — UK admissions tutors are reading for evidence that you want to study this specific thing for three years.

Fees, funding and the visa

This is where the post-Brexit change bites, and it is better to plan for it than to be surprised by it. French students pay international fees and require a Student visa, with the financial evidence that entails.

We do not publish tuition figures on this page. Universities set their own fees per course and academic year, and for international students those vary widely between institutions and subjects — check the figure on the course page of the university you are applying to.

Timing

UK undergraduate applications are usually made well before final Baccalauréat results, so you will normally apply on predicted grades and hold a conditional offer.

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single closing date, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly. Leave time for the visa, which is a step French students did not previously have to plan for at all.
