What Is a CAS? Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies Explained

A CAS number is one of the most important pieces of paper in your entire journey to the UK, and one of the least understood by first-time applicants. This page explains what it is, when you get one, and how our admissions support helps make sure yours is issued correctly and on time. It is not immigration advice, and we’ll say clearly where our role ends and where you need an official or regulated source instead.

What a CAS Actually Is

A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique reference number issued by your UK university, confirming that they’ve accepted you onto a specific course and that you meet the “genuine student” requirement. It is not a physical document, but the number and the details behind it are required to complete a UK Student visa application. Without a valid CAS, a Student visa application cannot proceed.

What CAS stands for

CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.

Two things about it surprise almost everyone the first time:

It is not a certificate or a letter. A CAS is an electronic record held by
your university and by the Home Office. You are not sent a document to print.
What you receive is a CAS number — a unique reference — along with the
details recorded against it.

It is not the same as your offer. An offer says the university will teach
you. A CAS is the university formally sponsoring your visa application. The
offer comes first; the CAS follows once you have accepted and met the
conditions.

CAS status: what the states mean

“What is my CAS status?” is one of the most common questions at this stage, and
it usually means one of a small number of things.

A CAS moves through defined states:

• Assigned — the university has created it and given you the number. This is
  the state you need in order to apply for your visa.
• Used — you have submitted a visa application quoting it. A CAS can only
  be used once. If a visa application is refused, you normally need a new
  CAS to reapply; the old one cannot be reused.
• Withdrawn or cancelled — the university has revoked it. This happens if
  you do not meet a condition, do not pay a required deposit, or your
  circumstances change.
• Expired — CAS records have a limited validity window, and a visa
  application must be made inside it.

The university that issued your CAS is the only place that can tell you its
current status. Not us, and not the Home Office directly. If you are unsure,
contact your university’s international or admissions office and quote your CAS
number.

We are deliberately not printing the validity period here. It is set by the
Home Office and has changed before; a number copied into a guide is precisely
what causes someone to apply outside the window. Your CAS statement shows its
own dates, and gov.uk publishes the current
rules.

When a CAS Is Issued

Universities issue a CAS only after you have:

• Accepted your offer unconditionally, meaning every academic and English-language condition has been met and verified.
• Paid any required tuition fee deposit, where the university requires one.
• Confirmed your course, start date, and level of study with the university.

This is exactly why the sequence matters: Offer Acceptance Support → Document Review → CAS. Rushing or skipping a step earlier in the process is one of the most common reasons a CAS gets delayed.

What Information Your CAS Contains, and Why Accuracy Matters

Your CAS records specific details (your course, level, dates, tuition fee, and the qualifications you used in your application), and these details are checked directly against your visa application. A mismatch between your CAS details and your visa application is a genuine, well-documented cause of visa complications. This is precisely why document accuracy earlier in the process (Document Review) isn’t a formality. It’s the reason your CAS, when issued, is correct the first time.

CAS Validity

A CAS has a defined validity period and is generally tied to a specific visa application window. It isn’t indefinite, and using it against the wrong intake or after it expires causes real problems. We’ll make sure you understand your specific CAS’s timeline, not a generic one.
