Do UK Universities Charge an Application Fee?

Mostly, no. The great majority of UK universities do not charge a fee to apply directly, particularly for postgraduate courses. You can apply to several universities without paying anything to any of them.

That surprises people, because the question is usually asked by students who have budgeted for application fees the way other countries require them. In the UK the fee people are thinking of is usually UCAS’s, and UCAS is only part of the picture.

Where a fee does exist

UCAS charges for undergraduate applications. If you are applying for a bachelor’s degree through UCAS, there is a fee set by UCAS covering the whole application — not per university. It is published on their site, and what UCAS is explains how that system works.

Postgraduate applications usually go direct to the university, and are usually free. Master’s and PhD applications are not normally made through UCAS, and most universities do not charge to receive one. This is the situation most of our students are in.

Some individual courses do charge. It is a minority, but it is real, and it tends to cluster in predictable places:

• Highly competitive programmes, particularly some MBAs
• Some art, design and architecture courses requiring portfolio assessment
• Occasionally, applications made outside the standard cycle

Check the specific course page. Where a fee exists, the university states it — and if you cannot find any mention of one, that is usually because there isn’t one.

The fee that should worry you is a different one

Here is the part worth reading twice.

No legitimate recruitment agency should charge you a fee to apply to a university. Agencies in this sector are paid by universities when a student enrols. That is how the model works, and it is how we work — we are paid by our recruitment partner once a referred student enrols, not by you.

So if someone is asking you for an “application fee”, a “processing fee”, a “registration fee” or a “file opening fee” before you have an offer, ask them directly why they are charging you when the university is not. There are agencies that charge students legitimately for defined advisory services, and there are others charging for something the university provides free.

A university’s own fee, published on its own website, is legitimate. A third party’s fee to submit a free application on your behalf usually is not.

What actually costs money

Students focused on application fees are often underestimating the real costs, which come later and are much larger:

• A tuition deposit, usually required to secure your place and release your CAS
• The visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, both payable up front
• Document costs — certified translations, transcript requests, courier fees
• English test fees, if you need one
• Proof of maintenance funds, which must sit in an account for a defined period

Applying to several universities

Because direct postgraduate applications are typically free, there is no financial reason to restrict how many you apply to. There are other good reasons — each application takes real effort, and a scattered application is a weak one — but cost is not usually among them.
