Study in the UK from Spain

The number a Spanish applicant needs is 7.0 out of 10. That is what Sheffield equates to a UK 2:1, the standard entry requirement for a taught master’s — and in Spanish terms a notable rather than a sobresaliente. A great many Spanish graduates who would be accepted never apply, because they assume the bar is higher than it is.

The marks that matter

Sheffield accepts the Grado and the Licenciatura, with this equivalence:

Spanish transcripts appear on both scales depending on the institution, and Sheffield publishes both — so read the row that matches your own transcript rather than converting between them. Converting a 4-point figure into a 10-point one yourself is a reliable way to understate your own result.

Most taught master’s courses ask for a 2:1, which is 7.0. A meaningful number will consider a 2:2 at 6.0, so a mark in the sixes opens a real set of options rather than none. If you are between the two, build a shortlist that spans both bands rather than applying only to courses at the top bar.

A UK taught master’s is normally one year, against the one or two years of a Spanish Máster depending on the programme. Where the comparison is one against two, that is a year of fees and living costs saved and a year earlier into work — the argument that most often decides it now that EU students pay international rates.

Undergraduate: the Bachillerato goes straight in

Sheffield states that “Titulo de Bachillerato (Spain) diploma holders will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.” No foundation year and no bridging qualification, with individual courses setting their own grade requirements.

Two structural differences are worth understanding first:

UK degrees are specialised from year one. You apply to read a single subject rather than entering a faculty, and the broad first year common in Spanish degrees does not exist. The subject choice happens earlier and matters more.

A UK bachelor’s is usually three years, against the four of a Spanish Grado — so the UK undergraduate route is a year shorter, not longer.

What Brexit changed

Since 2021, Spanish students are international students in the UK for both fee and immigration purposes: you need a Student visa and you pay international fees. Home-fee status and free movement no longer apply, and most Spanish-facing content about UK study still describes the old position.

Academic recognition is unchanged — 7.0 has not moved — but the cost and the paperwork have.

English language requirements

Sheffield’s published minimum is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for undergraduate study and 6.5 for postgraduate, with departments free to ask for more.

Some universities accept alternative evidence for applicants educated in English-medium programmes, but it is set course by course and never universal, so confirm it for your shortlist. Where a score falls just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Spanish applicants most often choose

Business and management, economics, law, engineering and architecture are common choices. Law and architecture both carry professional-recognition questions that differ between the UK and Spain — worth resolving before you apply rather than after you graduate.

Documents

Spanish applications are usually document-light: your Título de Bachillerato or degree certificate, your expediente académico, and a personal statement. The personal statement carries more weight in the UK than its Spanish equivalent might suggest, and it should be about the subject rather than about you — admissions tutors are reading for evidence that you want to study this specific thing for three years.

Fees and funding

We do not publish tuition figures on this page. Universities set their own fees per course and academic year, and for international students those vary widely between institutions and subjects — check the figure on the course page of the university you are applying to.

Timing

UK undergraduate applications are usually made before final Bachillerato results, so you will normally apply on predicted grades and hold a conditional offer.

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single closing date, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly. Leave time for the visa, which is a step Spanish students did not previously have to plan for.
