Study in the UK from India

Most of what is written for Indian applicants is written for school leavers. If you are applying for a master’s — and a large share of Indian students coming to the UK are — the questions that actually decide your application are different ones: whether your three-year degree is enough, what percentage you need from your particular university, and whether your Class XII English can stand in for IELTS. This page answers those first, then covers undergraduate entry.

Applying for a master’s from India

A three-year Indian bachelor’s degree is normally enough. This is the question we are asked most often, usually by someone who has been told otherwise. UK master’s degrees are built on a three-year honours structure, so a three-year Indian bachelor’s is the expected shape of an applicant, not a shortfall. The University of Sheffield states that applicants “will usually need a 3 or 4 year bachelors degree from a recognised university in a relevant subject for entry”; the University of Manchester requires “a minimum of a three-year degree”. You do not need a fourth year, and you do not need a master’s from India first.

The percentage you need depends on where you studied. This is the part that genuinely varies, and any page quoting you a single number is guessing. Manchester puts the range at “60-80% overall, depending on the quality of the university of prior study and grading scale”. Sheffield notes that “the score required will depend on the university you have attended and the course you have applied to study”. A 62% from a highly regarded institution can be read more favourably than a higher percentage elsewhere — which is why the honest answer to “is my CGPA enough” starts with which university awarded it.

As a reference point, Sheffield publishes its equivalence as first class ≈ 70%, a UK 2:1 ≈ 60%, and a UK 2:2 ≈ 55%. Most taught master’s courses ask for a 2:1 equivalent, and a meaningful number will consider a 2:2. If your transcript reports CGPA rather than percentage, send the grading key from your university alongside it rather than converting it yourself.

Your Class XII English may remove the need for IELTS. Several UK universities accept Standard XII English in place of a language test for master’s entry, and the threshold depends on your board. Birmingham publishes 75% or above for CBSE, CISCE and West Bengal, and 80% or above for other state boards. Sheffield states that “Standard XII English Language with at least 75% or above is generally accepted”. This is set course by course, so it must be confirmed against your actual shortlist — but it is worth checking before you book a test.

Your qualifications, recognised

CBSE and ISC (CISCE) Class XII results are recognised by UK universities, and strong performers can go direct to a UK bachelor’s degree without a Foundation Year, with the percentage needed rising as courses get more competitive. State board results are also accepted. They are assessed individually, and — as Birmingham’s published English thresholds show — some universities set a slightly higher bar for state boards than for CBSE or CISCE. That is a difference of degree, not a closed door. If your board or percentage does not clear a specific university’s direct-entry bar, a Foundation Programme is a genuine, well-used route in, not a downgrade.

English language requirements

For undergraduate and postgraduate entry alike, the position is the same in shape: many UK universities will accept your Class XII English, at a threshold that depends on your board, and others will ask for a test. It is university-specific and course-specific, never universal. Where a test is needed and your score falls short, a pre-sessional English course can bridge the gap without costing you the year.

Separately from anything a university asks, the UK government sets its own English requirement for the Student visa. The two are decided by different bodies against different evidence, and satisfying one does not satisfy the other. GOV.UK is the authoritative source for the visa rule.

Popular subjects among Indian applicants

Computer Science, Data Science and related tech fields, Business and Management, Engineering, and increasingly Law are the subjects Indian applicants most consistently pursue. At master’s level these are also among the most competitive, which is where the university-dependent percentage bands above matter most.

On scholarships, we would rather be useful than encouraging. GREAT Scholarships India is a real scheme, co-funded by the UK government and participating universities, for one-year taught master’s courses. It is also very small relative to the number of Indian students who apply, and it is course- and university-specific. Treat it as worth an application if your course is on the list, not as a funding plan. The same applies to Chevening, which is genuinely prestigious and correspondingly hard to win. Most Indian students who fund a UK master’s do it through a combination of family funds, an education loan, and a university scholarship attached to their specific offer — and that last one is the category most often missed, because it is awarded by the department rather than advertised nationally.

Application timing

CBSE Class XII results are typically released around May, with most state boards following in May to June — earlier and more UK-friendly timing than several other markets.

For master’s applicants the constraint is different. Most UK universities open postgraduate applications roughly a year ahead of entry and assess them as they arrive rather than against a single deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly. Courses in Computer Science, Data Science and Business routinely close to further applications well before the stated deadline.
