Study in the UK from Egypt

The Thanaweya Amma does not open a UK degree directly — but one or two years at an Egyptian university can, at an average of 70-75%. That route is the single most useful thing on this page for a student who has already started a degree at home, and it is rarely mentioned anywhere else. At master’s level the bar is 75% for a UK 2:1, with a caveat worth reading carefully.

Leaving school: the Thanaweya Amma needs a foundation year

The University of Nottingham’s published position is that students holding the Thanaweya A’ama certificate “are required to complete a foundation course.” Direct entry to the first year of a UK degree is not available on that qualification alone.

But university study in Egypt changes the position. Nottingham states that for applicants with one or two years of university study already completed, “an average of 70-75% is typically required for admission.”

So if you have started a degree in Egypt, you may be able to move to a UK bachelor’s without a foundation year at all. Students in that position often assume the only choices are to finish the Egyptian degree or start again from the beginning in the UK. Neither is necessarily true, and the difference is a year of fees and living costs.

Where neither route applies, a foundation programme is the standard path — one year, purpose-built for this transition, ending in entry to the degree itself rather than another application.

Applying for a master’s from Egypt

The grades required:

Note how narrow that band is. Five percentage points separates a 2:1 from a 2:2, where in several other markets the gap is ten or more. If you are sitting at 72%, you are inside the 2:2 band and not far outside the 2:1 one, and that is a materially different position from being told you simply do not qualify.

The caveat matters as much as the numbers. Nottingham states plainly that “requirements may vary for individual courses and we do require higher grades from some universities.” Which Egyptian institution awarded your degree affects the answer, and so does the course you are applying to. A 76% is not automatically a 2:1 everywhere, and the honest response to “do I qualify” starts with which university and which course.

Send your transcript as your university issued it, with the grading key, rather than converting anything yourself.

English language requirements

Plan on sitting a recognised English test. Requirements are set course by course, typically IELTS 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate entry, with some departments asking for more.

Note that a foundation programme will normally carry its own English requirement separate from the degree it leads into, so there may be two thresholds to clear at two different points. Where a score falls just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Egyptian applicants most often choose

Engineering, business and management, computer science, architecture and health subjects including pharmacy are common choices. Health subjects and architecture both carry professional-recognition requirements on top of academic entry, so start those earlier than you think you need to.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification you rely on, with certified translations where the originals are in Arabic. If you are using the one-or-two-years-of-university route into undergraduate entry, your Egyptian university transcript is the document the whole application rests on — make sure it shows both the years completed and the average.

Funding

Most Egyptian students fund UK study through family resources, sometimes with a sponsor or an education loan. Sponsored students should confirm the approved university and course list before building a shortlist, because those lists rarely align with university deadlines and an offer from an unapproved institution cannot be used.

Timing

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly.

If you are using the university-study route into undergraduate entry, plan the timing deliberately: you will be applying partway through an Egyptian degree, and the transcript you need may not exist until that year is complete.
