Most guides answer this with a table of tuition figures and stop. That table is usually out of date, and it answers the wrong question. What decides whether a UK master’s is affordable for you is not the tuition line — it is the total cost of the whole qualification, and in the UK that total is shaped by something most comparisons ignore: the degree takes one year.
This page explains what actually drives the cost of a UK master’s, where the genuine savings are, and how to find your real numbers. We do not publish tuition figures, deliberately — universities set them per course and per year, and a figure copied into a guide is stale before it is useful.
The one-year master’s is the real saving
A taught master’s in the UK is normally one year. In much of the world the equivalent is two.
That single structural fact usually outweighs every other cost decision you will make. A second year is not just a second year of tuition — it is a second year of rent, food, transport, visa costs and, just as importantly, a second year of not earning. Comparing a UK annual fee against a two-year programme elsewhere and concluding the UK is expensive is the most common costing error international students make.
So before optimising which university is cheapest, understand that the biggest saving is often already built into the format.
What actually drives the cost
Subject
This is the largest lever you control. Classroom-based subjects — business, management, law, humanities, most social sciences, computing — sit at the lower end. Subjects requiring laboratories, studios, clinical placements or specialist equipment sit materially higher. Medicine and dentistry sit at the top by a wide margin.
If you are flexible on subject, this moves your total more than any other choice.
Where in the UK you study
London carries a substantial cost-of-living premium that has nothing to do with teaching quality. The same subject outside London is frequently cheaper to study and significantly cheaper to live through. Over a full year that difference is large enough to change which courses are realistic for you.
This is the lever most applicants underuse, because rankings are discussed far more often than rent.
The university itself
Every UK university sets its own fees, and the spread for a comparable master’s is wider than most applicants expect. Two universities with similar standing can differ substantially on the same subject. This is exactly where “cheapest” and “best for you” stop being the same question — and where checking several is worth the hour it takes.
Course length and format
Not every master’s is twelve months. Some run longer, some include a placement year, and some are available part-time. Each changes the total, and a longer course with lower annual tuition can cost more overall than a shorter one with a higher headline fee.
Tuition is not the whole number
A realistic budget for a UK master’s has four parts, and only the first is the one advertised:
- Tuition — set per course, per entry year.
- Living costs — the largest variable, driven mostly by city.
- Visa and health surcharge — fixed, published by the UK government, and payable up front.
- One-off costs — flights, deposits, initial setup, document and translation fees.
The Home Office also requires you to show maintenance funds for your visa, and that requirement is set by where you will study. A course that looks affordable on tuition can still be out of reach if the maintenance requirement is beyond you — so check both together, not in sequence. Our visa support guide covers what that application involves.
How to find genuinely affordable master’s courses
There is a method, and it takes about an hour.
- Fix your subject first. Cost comparisons across different subjects are meaningless.
- Decide whether London is essential to you. This removes or keeps a large cost block before you look at a single fee.
- Open the course page, not the university homepage. International fees are published per course for a specific entry year. That page is the only figure that counts.
- Build a shortlist of six to eight, spread deliberately across the range rather than clustered at one end.
- Add living costs per city, not per country. Shortlists change shape at this step.
- Check entry requirements at the same time. A course you cannot get into is not affordable at any price.
Our broader guide to affordable UK universities covers this method across all levels of study, including undergraduate.
Ways to reduce the cost that actually work
Scholarships. Worth applying for, but plan as though you will not receive one — most are competitive and awarded late. See also how to fund UK study. See scholarships for international students.
University-specific fee reductions. Many institutions operate early-payment discounts, alumni discounts or country-specific awards. These are published, unglamorous, and routinely missed because applicants look only at scholarship pages.
Choosing a lower-cost city. Reliable, immediate, and entirely within your control.
Applying in good time. Rushed applications cost money — expedited documents, re-sat tests, last-minute flights. A January intake can be the better financial decision if it means arriving prepared rather than scrambling for September.
Part-time work during study. The student visa permits limited work during term time, but treat it as a contribution to living costs, not as part of your tuition plan. Building a budget that depends on it is how students get into difficulty.
A word on “cheapest”
We are not going to name one university as the cheapest in the UK, because that claim is not honest. Fees change annually, they vary by course within the same institution, and the cheapest tuition in an expensive city is regularly not the cheapest total.
What we will do is tell you, for your subject and your circumstances, which options are genuinely realistic on your budget — and say plainly when they are not. If you are weighing the level itself, our guide to postgraduate study in the UK covers what a UK master’s involves before cost enters the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a master's degree in the UK?
Most taught master’s degrees are one year full-time. This is shorter than the two-year norm in many countries, and it is the single largest reason the total cost of a UK master’s is often lower than it first appears.
Which subjects are cheapest to study at master's level?
Classroom-based subjects — business, management, law, humanities, social sciences and computing — are generally at the lower end. Laboratory, studio and clinical subjects cost more because they cost more to deliver.
Is it cheaper to study outside London?
Usually yes, and the saving comes from two directions at once: tuition is often lower and living costs are substantially lower. For a one-year master’s this is one of the most effective decisions you can make.
Can I work while studying a master's in the UK?
The student visa permits limited work during term time. Treat it as help with living costs rather than a way to fund tuition — a budget that depends on term-time earnings is fragile.
Do I need to show the full amount before I apply for a visa?
You need to evidence tuition and a set level of maintenance funds. The maintenance figure depends on where you will be studying, and it is set by the UK government rather than the university.
Are cheaper universities worse?
No. UK universities are regulated to the same standards, and fee level reflects subject, location and institutional strategy far more than teaching quality. The more useful question is which course fits your goals, not which carries the highest price.
Is a January start cheaper than September?
Not inherently — but arriving prepared usually is. Rushed applications generate avoidable costs, so if January means you apply properly rather than scrambling, it is frequently the better financial decision.
