About the University
The University of Sheffield traces its origins to Sheffield Medical School, founded in 1828, and Firth College, founded in 1879. These merged with Sheffield Technical School in 1897 to form University College Sheffield, which received its royal charter as the University of Sheffield in 1905. It is a founding member of the Russell Group.

The university’s Western Bank Campus sits about a mile west of Sheffield city centre.
