Sheffield sits in South Yorkshire’s eastern Pennine foothills, popularly said to be built on seven hills, and is around 35 miles south of Leeds. It made its name manufacturing steel, including the invention of stainless steel in 1912, and today is one of England’s greenest cities. StudyUKToday works with two real universities here.
What Sheffield Is Actually Like
Sheffield earned its “Steel City” nickname through genuine metallurgical innovation, from crucible steel in the 1740s to Sheffield plate and, in 1912, Harry Brearley’s invention of stainless steel here, all of which fuelled a 19th-century population boom. What surprises many newcomers is how green the city actually is: Sheffield has around 4.5 million trees and more than 250 parks, woodlands and gardens, with a section of the Peak District National Park sitting within the city boundary itself.
Sheffield hosts the World Snooker Championship every year, and is home to Sheffield F.C., recognised as the world’s oldest football club, alongside Sandygate, the world’s oldest football ground still in use. Its steep streets, including one of England’s sharpest residential gradients, are a genuine part of getting around on foot, and the city has an established tram network alongside rail and bus connections to the rest of Yorkshire.
