About the University
The University of Manchester in its current form was created in 2004, through the merger of two long-standing institutions: the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). UMIST’s own roots go back to the Manchester Mechanics’ Institution, founded in 1824, and the university counts that year among its official founding dates. It is classed as a “red brick” university, part of the group of civic universities founded in major English cities in the 19th century.

The university’s main campus runs along Oxford Road, just south of Manchester city centre, in an urban setting that blends into the surrounding city. Manchester is one of England’s largest cities, with a large combined student population across its universities and strong transport links across the North West and beyond.
