Manchester Metropolitan University’s roots trace back to the Manchester Mechanics’ Institution, founded in 1824, followed by the Manchester School of Design and a series of other technical and art colleges that later merged. The institution became Manchester Polytechnic in 1970 and gained university status in 1992.
