The University of Bristol received its royal charter in 1909, though its history goes back further, to a Merchant Venturers’ school founded in 1595 and to University College, Bristol, which had existed since 1876. Bristol Medical School, founded in 1833, was brought into the university’s structure in the 1890s and later became its school of medicine.
