About the University
The University of Bath received its royal charter and university status in 1966, as part of a wave of new universities created following the Robbins Report into higher education. Its institutional history traces back further through a line of Bristol technical institutions: the Bristol Trade School, founded in 1856, which became the Merchant Venturers’ Technical College in 1885, and later the Bristol College of Technology and Bristol College of Science and Technology, before the college relocated to Bath and gained full university status.
Location
The university’s main campus sits on Claverton Down, on high ground overlooking Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage city in South West England known for its Georgian architecture and Roman-era history. The campus itself was purpose-built from 1964 onwards in a modernist style, and is largely self-contained, with most university facilities and much of the student accommodation on one site above the city.

Bath is particularly associated with strength in business, accounting, and finance, home to a dedicated School of Management established in 1966, alongside science, engineering, and health-related subjects. In the most recent national Research Excellence Framework assessment, a large majority of the university’s submitted research was rated at the highest two classifications for originality and rigour.
