Canadian applicants ask “what GPA do I need for a UK master’s” more than any other question, and for Canada specifically there is no single answer — and that is not evasion. Canadian universities grade on 4.0, 4.3, 4.33, 4.5, 9-point, 10-point, 12-point and percentage scales, and UK universities publish requirements per institution as a result. The useful thing this page can do is tell you how to get a real answer rather than a wrong one.
Applying for a master’s from Canada
You will normally need a four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant subject. That is the standard Canadian degree, so it is rarely the obstacle.
The grade required depends on which Canadian university awarded it. Sheffield sets requirements institution by institution precisely because the scales differ so widely. As a published example, for the University of British Columbia it equates A or 85% to a UK 2:1, and B or 72% to a 2:2.
Do not read that as a national rule. A “B” does not mean the same thing at every Canadian institution, and a 3.7 on a 4.33 scale is a materially different result from a 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. Three practical consequences:
- Never convert your GPA yourself to make it look familiar to a UK reader. With this many scales in play, self-conversion is the most reliable way to understate a qualifying result.
- Send the transcript as issued, with the grading key your university publishes. Most Canadian transcripts carry the scale on the reverse — include that page.
- Check the specific UK university’s own table rather than a general one. Because requirements are set per Canadian institution, the same transcript genuinely produces different answers at different UK universities.
Most taught master’s courses ask for a 2:1; a meaningful number will consider a 2:2. Tell us your university and your average and we will tell you which bands you clear.
Our guides to postgraduate study in the UK and master’s degree admission cover the process, and PhD admission covers research degrees — where UK practice differs sharply from the Canadian model: you normally apply to a specific project and supervisor rather than into a department with coursework years attached.
A UK taught master’s is normally one year, against the one to two years common in Canada. Where the comparison is one against two, that is a year of tuition and living costs saved and a year earlier into work.
Applying to a UK bachelor’s from Canada
Canadian high school qualifications give direct entry — no foundation year.
Sheffield accepts “an accredited Canadian High School Diploma with between 85%-75% in 5 subjects at Grade 12”, with the exact average depending on how competitive the course is, ranging from around 87% for the most selective offers down to 75% for others. Provincial diplomas from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and Yukon are all listed.
Two provinces work differently and it is worth knowing which applies to you:
- Ontario. The OSSD is accepted on the basis of six Grade 12 U or M courses. It is the count and the course type that matter, not just the average.
- Quebec. The Diplôme d’Études Collégiales (DEC) is listed as an accepted qualification in its own right.
The structural difference to plan around: UK degrees are specialised from year one. You apply to read a single subject rather than entering a faculty and declaring later, and switching afterwards is harder than in the Canadian system. A UK bachelor’s is also usually three years rather than four.
Undergraduate admission explains how UK applications work, and UCAS versus direct application explains which route applies to you.
English language requirements
Sheffield’s published entry requirements for Canada do not set out an English language condition, which is consistent with Canadian applicants generally being treated as having met it through their education.
That said, it is set course by course, and applicants educated primarily in French may be asked for evidence. Confirm it for your specific shortlist rather than assuming, and where a score is ever required and falls short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge.
Subjects Canadian applicants most often choose
Business and management, law, economics, computer science and psychology are common choices. Law is worth a note: UK law degrees are undergraduate rather than graduate, so the structure is entirely unlike the Canadian JD route, and what a UK law degree qualifies you to do in a Canadian province is a separate question worth answering before you apply.
Documents
Canadian applications are usually document-light: transcripts, your diploma or degree certificate, and a personal statement. Include the grading-scale page of your transcript — for Canada that single page does more work than anything else in the file.
The personal statement carries more weight in the UK than a Canadian application essay might lead you to expect, and it should be about the subject rather than about you: UK admissions tutors are reading for evidence that you want to study this specific thing for three or four years.
Our guide to what documents are required sets out the full list, and common application document mistakes covers the errors that cost the most time.
Fees and funding
We do not publish tuition figures on this page. Universities set their own fees per course and academic year, and the honest comparison for a Canadian student is rarely the sticker price alone — it is one year of a UK master’s against one or two at home, including the year of earnings.
Scholarships attached to a specific offer, awarded by the department rather than advertised nationally, are the category most often missed. Our guide to scholarships for international students sets out what is realistically available, including an honest view of your chances.
Timing
UK undergraduate applications run to a different calendar from Canadian ones and are usually made before final Grade 12 results, so you will normally apply on predicted grades and hold a conditional offer.
Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA do I need for a UK master's from Canada?
There is no single national figure, because Canadian universities use 4.0, 4.3, 4.33, 4.5, 9-point, 10-point, 12-point and percentage scales. UK universities publish requirements per Canadian institution — Sheffield equates A or 85% from the University of British Columbia to a UK 2:1, and B or 72% to a 2:2. Tell us your university and average for a specific answer.
Should I convert my GPA to a 4.0 scale?
No. With this many scales in use, converting is the most common way a qualifying result gets understated. Send the transcript as issued and include the grading-scale page.
Can I go straight into a UK degree from Canadian high school?
Yes. Sheffield accepts an accredited Canadian High School Diploma with between 85% and 75% in five Grade 12 subjects, depending on the course. No foundation year is needed.
I am in Ontario. Is the OSSD treated differently?
It is assessed on six Grade 12 U or M courses, so the course type and count matter alongside the grades. Quebec’s DEC is separately listed as an accepted qualification.
Do I need IELTS?
Sheffield’s published Canadian requirements do not set an English condition. It is course-specific, and applicants educated primarily in French may be asked for evidence — confirm it for your shortlist.
Is there a fee for using StudyUKToday?
Applying to a university through StudyUKToday does not have an application fee — we are paid by the university once you enrol, not by you.
