Study in the UK from Mexico

Mexico sends comparatively few students to the UK, but those who come are overwhelmingly postgraduate — around seven in ten arrive for a master’s rather than a bachelor’s. That shapes this page. The number that matters most is 8 out of 10, which is what a UK 2:1 converts to, and the requirement most likely to catch a school leaver out is that the Bachillerato does not give direct entry.

Applying for a master’s from Mexico

Sheffield asks for “a 4-5 year bachelors degree from a recognised university in a relevant subject.” The Mexican Licenciatura typically runs four to five years, so this is rarely the obstacle — but note the range, because a longer professional Licenciatura is expected rather than unusual.

The grades required:

An 8 out of 10 is a solid Licenciatura result rather than an exceptional one, and it is the standard bar for most taught master’s courses in the UK. A meaningful number of courses will consider a 2:2, which brings 7 out of 10 into range of a real set of options rather than none.

Send your transcript and título as issued, with the grading key, rather than converting anything yourself.

One honest note on sourcing: Sheffield publishes this conversion in a general international table rather than in a section naming Mexican qualifications specifically, and the page itself advises “if your qualification is not listed here, please contact us.” Treat 8/10 as the working expectation and confirm it against each university on your shortlist — which is what we would do with you anyway.

A UK taught master’s is normally one year. For a Mexican applicant weighing a UK master’s against a domestic or US one, that compression — one year of fees and living costs, and a year earlier back into work — is usually the deciding practical argument.

Leaving school: the Bachillerato needs a foundation year

Sheffield’s published position is direct: “students completing the local Mexican High School system will need to undertake an approved foundation programme … before entry onto an undergraduate degree.”

The Bachillerato on its own does not open the first year of a UK degree. That is worth knowing early, because it changes the timeline and the budget by a year, and a great deal of general advice about studying in the UK does not mention it.

A foundation programme is the standard route: one year, purpose-built for exactly this transition, ending in entry to the degree itself rather than in another application. If you hold the International Baccalaureate or A levels instead of, or alongside, the Bachillerato, those are more direct routes.

English language requirements

Sheffield requires “an internationally recognised English language qualification such as IELTS.” Specific scores are set course by course rather than published as a single national figure, and typically sit at IELTS 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate entry, with some departments asking for more.

Plan on sitting a recognised test. Where a score lands just short of an offer condition, a pre-sessional English course is the standard bridge and does not usually cost you the intake.

Subjects Mexican applicants most often choose

Business and management, engineering, economics, architecture and law are common choices. Architecture and law both carry professional-recognition questions that differ between the UK and Mexico — worth resolving before you apply rather than after you graduate.

Documents

Expect certificates and full transcripts for every qualification, with certified translations where the originals are in Spanish. For master’s applications the título alongside the transcript is what establishes the degree is complete, so send both rather than the transcript alone.

Funding

Most Mexican students fund UK study through family resources, sometimes with a scholarship or employer support. Timing

Postgraduate applications generally open around a year before entry and are assessed as they arrive rather than against a single deadline, so applying early is worth more than applying perfectly.

The Mexican academic calendar and the UK’s September start do not align neatly, so there is often a gap between finishing at home and beginning in the UK. That is normal and needs no explaining away.
