About the University
The University of Cambridge was founded in 1209, by scholars who left Oxford after a dispute with the town, and received a royal charter from King Henry III in 1231. It is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world. Like Oxford, Cambridge is a collegiate university, made up of 31 constituent colleges alongside the university’s central academic departments and administration.

The university is based in the city of Cambridge, England, with its colleges and departments spread across the historic city rather than a single enclosed campus. Cambridge is a relatively compact city built closely around the university, so student life is closely woven into the life of the city itself.
What Students Can Study
Cambridge organises its academic departments into six broad schools: Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Humanities and Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Technology. As with Oxford, teaching combines small-group college-based supervisions with university-run lectures and classes. History is a particular long-standing strength, with one of the largest history departments in the world.
