The University for the Creative Arts traces its origins to several small art schools founded in Kent and Surrey in the 19th century, including Guildford School of Art. It was formed in 2005 through the merger of the Kent Institute of Art and Design and the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, and gained university status in 2008.
