About the University
Heriot-Watt University traces its origins to the School of Arts of Edinburgh, founded in 1821 as the world’s first mechanics’ institute. It was granted university status by royal charter in 1966, and takes its name from the Scottish inventor James Watt and philanthropist George Heriot.
Location
The main Scottish campus is at Riccarton, on the western edge of Edinburgh, with further campuses elsewhere in Scotland and overseas in Dubai and Malaysia.
