Leicester sits in the East Midlands, around 90 miles northwest of London, and has over two thousand years of continuous history, from a Roman settlement through to a major Victorian manufacturing centre. It’s also one of the UK’s most ethnically diverse cities. StudyUKToday works with two real universities here.

What Leicester Is Actually Like

Leicester’s Roman roots go back to around AD 47, and the Jewry Wall, a surviving fragment of Roman-era masonry, is one of the more striking reminders of that history. More recently, Leicester made international news in 2012 when King Richard III’s remains were discovered beneath a car park in the city centre, later reburied in Leicester Cathedral in 2015, a genuinely significant archaeological event. In between, the city built its wealth on Victorian-era hosiery, textiles and footwear manufacturing.

Leicester is one of the UK’s most ethnically diverse cities, shaped by waves of immigration since the Second World War from Poland, Ireland, India, Uganda and Eastern Europe among others, and that diversity is a genuine, everyday part of the city’s character, food and community life. Leicester City F.C. and Leicester Tigers rugby club give the city a strong sporting identity too. Getting around is straightforward via the Midland Main Line and good motorway access via the M1 and M69.
