Hull, formally Kingston upon Hull, sits on England’s east coast where the River Hull meets the Humber Estuary, around 11 miles from the North Sea. It grew into one of England’s major fishing and trading ports, and was named UK City of Culture for 2017. StudyUKToday works with one real university here.
What Hull Is Actually Like
Hull was founded in 1299 and grew wealthy on wool exports, whaling and deep-sea fishing, and the historic Old Town and Hull Marina still reflect that maritime past today, alongside newer attractions like The Deep, an award-winning aquarium on the waterfront. The city suffered severe bomb damage in the Second World War, more than almost any other UK city outside London, and much of the modern centre reflects post-war rebuilding.
Hull’s 2017 UK City of Culture year brought significant investment and attention, and the city has since become a genuine filming location, nicknamed “Hullywood” by some for productions shot here. The port remains active today, handling millions of tonnes of cargo a year, with ferry links to continental Europe alongside good rail connections via Hull Paragon Interchange.
